Abercrombie House – a heritage treasure of the region

Abercrombie House, home of the Morgan family, is a heritage treasure of the region and one of the few historic houses in Australia which is presented to the public as a living, authentic, heritage masterpiece for visitors to explore on self-guided tours. Built in the 1870s by Bathurst pioneers the Stewart family, Abercrombie House is one of the finest Scottish Baronial mansions in Australia which has been restored, conserved and preserved by the Morgan family in an ongoing project spanning three generations and fifty years.

It was the first privately owned historic house regularly open to the public in Australia and has been an icon of the tourism industry and visitor economy of Bathurst since early 1969. Visitors are welcome to explore the house with its many grand rooms, walk in the grounds and gardens, relax in the verandah coffee shop – open weekends & school holidays, visit the chapel and out buildings and drop in to Julia’s Antiques & Collectables Emporium for that surprise vintage collectable gift!

Abercrombie House is also available for a range of special events & functions and has a calendar of special heritage themed events throughout the year, and there are opportunities to stay in an East Wing Suite in the warmer months – or in our more rustic Stables Village Accommodation.
